|Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch:|| The Maritime History Archive (MHA) was established at Memorial University in 1971 with a mandate to collect and preserve original documents and copies of documents relating to the history of sea-based activities in the North Atlantic region. A major focus of the MHA archival holdings are records relating to the fishery, trade and settlement of Newfoundland.|
|Scope and Content:|| The Maritime History Archive commenced the collection of English parish records during the period 1973-1980. The parish records document the genealogical origins of Newfoundland families whose ancestors had emigrated from England before the twentieth century.|
Collection consists of microfilmed copies of records of many parishes in the south West of England, particularly in the counties of Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire. The collection focuses on those areas which supplied crews for the Newfoundland fishery and the places of origin of Newfoundland settlers. Devon parishes predominate. The collection is indexed by parish.
