Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: William Cox & Company was a mercantile business established in Fogo, and was a successor to the business established by Thomas Slade and his brother-in-law William Cox in 1813. Slade and Cox carried on all the functions of a typical outport fish merchant firm, importing and selling goods while buying and exporting fish acquired from their resident fishing clients. The firm closed in the late 1860s and the Fogo property was later purchased by William Waterman & Company, forerunners to J. W. Hodge & Company.
Scope and Content: Volume consists of the closing inventory, December 31, 1870, listing goods for the business of William Cox & Company, Fogo, Newfoundland. Goods are listed under the headings: fish, fishing gear, glassware, earthenware, hardware, cutlery, iron mongery, jewelry, leather goods, hosiery, medicine, and stationery.
Acquisition Source: Purchased from an auction of Nimshi Carew's estate.
