Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Miles Ward (1702-1792) was a prosperous fish dealer and general merchant in eighteenth-century Salem, Massachusetts. He began his career as a joiner in the 1720s and expanded his trading activities in the 1730s, entering shipping by 1740. All his vessels combined fishing with the coasting trade to Maryland and Virginia, and overseas voyages to Europe and the West Indies. Although he was not a particularly wealthy or innovative merchant, the quality of his accounts and the length of time they cover are noteworthy.
Scope and Content: Fonds consists of microfilmed copies of three account books, 1745-1754, 1753-1764, and 1765-1777, showing the history of fishing vessels and the relationships between merchant and individual fishermen over an extended period
