Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Captain Harry (Henry W.) Stone (1914-2003), mariner, marine inspector, and harbour master, was born at Monroe, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland in 1914. He married Ethel Eileen Hewitt, Halifax, Nova Scotia. They have two children.
Stone went to sea at the age of 14, initially employed as a deck hand on a schooner. He commanded two home trading vessels before earning his mate's coastwise certificate. Stone took his master's home trade certificate in order to join the navy in 1941, and worked with the Atlantic Convoy as head officer on a fleetsweeper. Following 1943, he was stationed overseas, on a minesweeper in the English Channel and the Irish Sea.
After the war, Stone received his first mate's foreign going certificate and made frequent voyages to the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic. In 1957 he accepted employment with the federal Department of Transport in St. John's as a tackle inspector on cargo ships. In 1960 he was appointed St. John's harbour master, a position he retained until his retirement in 1979.
Scope and Content: Fonds consists of 4141 photographs which Captain Stone had taken or collected over the past five decades and which documented in detail the shipping activity in and around the port of St. John's and the outports of Newfoundland. Since 1960, when Stone became harbour master at St. John's, he attempted to document every vessel which visited the port. In addition to photographs, the fonds includes Stone's notes and clippings on the vessels, as well as information on shipwrecks and other marine related activities. The fonds also includes 14 logbooks of the Clyde, Blue Boy and Theron.
Fonds is arranged in four series according to the form of the material: Photographs, 1900-1994; Notes and clippings, 1960-1994; Logbooks, 1967-1980; and Published material. The published material has been added to the MHA reference library.
