Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: A series of acts relating to merchant shipping, the first in 1786, required that the owners of any British ship with a deck and of over 15 tons, register it with the Customs Officer in its home port. The act of 1825 further expanded the act, and in 1854 the Merchant Shipping Act, consolidated previous legislation and instituted the official numbering of all newly registered ships. The original certificates were maintained at the Customs House in London, and were destroyed in a fire in 1814. Thereafter separate series of transcripts were maintained, in the class of BT 107 for registries prior to 1854 and BT 108 from 1855-1889.
Scope and Content: Series consists of parts of the BT 107/108 Series that compliments the Maritime History Archive's Mandate. The MHA has volumes for colonial ports and the port of Liverpool. The certificates are the registration of ownership of the vessel and give descriptive information on each vessel as well as the name, occupation and residence of owners and builders. Captains are also frequently listed. Transactions are recorded in series BT 109. Records are arranged chronologically by port of registry.
