Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Although Certificates of Competency for masters of foreign going vessels had been compulsory in Britain since 1850, there were no examinations taking place in Canada until 1871, when the provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act, Colonial, 1869 and of H.M. Order in Council, 1871, came into effect. Other volumes in this series include certificates for New South Wales.
Scope and Content: Series consists of selected volumes listing masters and mates who were granted certificates at the ports of Atlantic Canada and Newfoundland, from 1871, together with a register of service subsequent to the issue of the certificate.
