Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: The Merchant Shipping Act, 1854 made provision for Customs Officers in United Kingdom ports to submit to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen, annual lists of ships registered in each port. Such lists had already, on an informal basis, been submitted from both UK and plantation (Colonial) ports since 1786, and plantation ports continued the informal arrangement after the act came into force.
Scope and Content: Series consists of microfilm copies of volumes 1-37, the complete BT 162 series. Included are annual lists of ships registered at each colonial port submitted to the Registrar of Shipping and Seamen, distinguishing British and foreign built vessels and noting those that have been lost, sold or taken as prizes etc. and those which have not entered or cleared port for a period of one year.
