Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Joseph Orne (1683-1748) of Salem, Massachusetts, was a shoemaker's son who became an important fish and export merchant in the period after Queen Anne's War. Little is known of his own history, but the account book is the only surviving one covering the period of the 1720s, when the Massachusetts fishery was rapidly expanding after nearly a quarter of a century of continual interruption.
Scope and Content: Fonds consists of a microfilm copy of an account book describing Orne's dealings with the fishermen that crewed his schooners to the offshore banks
