Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Born Eastport 1939; Professor in the Department of Geography, MUN from 1970; PhD., Birmingham, 1979; Chair of the Board of the Maritime History Archive, 1984-. Handcock has published extensively of the history and development of Trinity, Trinity Bay, and researched 17th and 18th century migrations, settlements and fisheries for the Historical Atlas of Canada.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of Handcock's research notes and a series of maps. The research notes were compiled from documents used in the study of the West of England/Newfoundland settlement. List of Newfoundland built ships registered at Exeter, 1786-1886; transcripts of entries from the register of removals and settlement examination of Devon and Dorset parishes, 1802-1841; transcripts from parish registers, Dartmouth, 1731-1838. The fonds also includes 53 maps arranged in series which include Trinity harbour and Trinity land ownership; patterns of settlement of Newfoundland; maps of part of and the whole of Newfoundland by early explorers and cartographers and several ordnance surveys for counties in England. Also included are maps by Albert Jones who was a research assistant in the Geography Department in the late 1970s.
