Volume 1 includes orders, grants, petitions and some correspondence relating primarily to the fisheries for the period 1623-1671. Volumes 2-10 (1678-1781) are composed of draft correspondence from the Board of Trade. Some drafts will also be found in CO 194. Volume 11 is devoted exclusively to instructions for John Elliot, Governor of Newfoundland, 1786-1789. Volumes 12 and 13 contain information which might be expected to be found in CO 194, including inward communications concerning matters such as the French and British fisheries, reports on forts and ordnance, the possibility of hostile attacks, etc., for the same period, 1767-1782. In addition to these two peculiar volumes, some copies and abstracts of incoming correspondence, 1623-1724, will be found scattered throughout much of the class. Volume 14 provides a precis of correspondence, 1802-1807.
Colonial Office 195 was discontinued as a series in 1867 though registers of outgoing correspondence were continued to 1922. Some drafts of out-letters will be found in CO 194. Note that CO 363, Newfoundland. Register of Out-letters (see this guide, Indexes and Registers), volume 1 is actually an entry book providing copies of despatches to governors, 1868-1872.
