Scope and Content: Series consists of parts of the Colonial Office series 199 and is divided into three distinct categories: Volumes 1-15 includes copies of colonial newspapers (1838-1855); Volumes 16-19 is composed of various reports and accounts (1677, 1772-1773, ca. 1807, 1838); volumes 20-98 provides the blue books of statistics for Newfoundland (1801-1903).
The MHA has volumes 16-28 from this series. Volumes 1-15 have not been copied but the rest of this series, volumes 16-98 is available at the NAC. Volume 16 contains an account, with a map, of the colony and fishery of Newfoundland, evidently prepared in 1677 for Joseph Williamson, (1603-1701), Secretary of State for the Northern Department, 1674-1679; it provides a census, trade statistics, fishery regulations and information on the French fishery by Governor Molyneux Shuldham, ([1717]-1798) and the part of his instructions requesting the report. Volume 18, ca 1807, is a return of the possessions at Conception Bay compiled apparently from various returns submitted between 1702 and 1807; it gives the name and description of each fishing room, the name of the claimant to the fishing right, the nature of the claim, the current occupant, and the names of those who erected or sold buildings. Volume 19 (1838) includes papers relating to an appeal to the Privy Council in the case of Edward Kielley, district surgeon in St. John's, against William Carson, Speaker of the House, and other members of the House. The appeal concerned the matter of House privilege arising from a case of assault and battery, and false imprisonment. Volumes 20-28 include the Blue Books for the years 1821-23, 1825, 1827-28.
