Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Edwin John Duder Jr. (1853-1918) was the son of E.J. Duder Sr., owner of a large mercantile firm in St. Johnís, Newfoundland. In 1871 Duder Jr. joined his fatherís business and on his death in 1881 took control of the business, expanding it to Twillingate (at the former Cox and Slades premises), Fogo, Herring Neck and Change Islands. The firm owned a large number of ships on the Newfoundland registry and suffered badly in the bank crash of 1894. On 24 May 1895 the Duder northeast coast premises were sold by the creditors. By 1897, the Twillingate premises were bought by Ashbourne.
Scope and Content: The fonds consists of two customer account ledgers for the firm of E.J. Duder, Twillingate, for the years 1893 and 1895. The ledgers identify debits (Dr) and credits (Cr) of residents of Twillingate, as well as various vessels including those owned by Duder such as the Aurora, May Flower, Sunbeam, Annie Roberts, Belle, Nancibel, Brilliant Star, Orion, Experiment, Paragon, Garfield, Tamarack, and Niobe.
