Public Photo Catalog Search
The Public Photo Catalog contains over 4000 records of photographs from the more than 17,000 held at the Maritime History Archive. Each record contains 24 fields, one of which provides a view of the photo described in the record. We are able to make these records available to the public for one of three reasons: they are in the public domain; the MHA holds copyright; or copyright holders have given permission to the MHA to have them displayed on the MHA web site. The public database is a work in progress. Many more images fit the criteria to be listed publicly and as we review and update each record in our larger database we will be adding these records to the Public Photo Catalog.
The Search Everything option examines every field in every record. The Title option searches the Photo Title field only and the Description option searches the Scope and Content field only.
The result of a search will produce up to 10 records on the screen showing a thumbnail image of the photograph and the data contained in the following six fields: Photo title, Collection title, Photographer, Image no., Description, and Image Location. If there are more than ten results, only the first ten appear with links to the remaining results at the top and bottom of the page. Clicking on the thumbnail image will call up a larger version of the image along with every field in the record that contains information. Fields names without information do not appear.
