Wednesday 4 Five men with Mr. K at work until 3 pm when it began to rain & continued so

The posts in second story now all in place about eight feet of lofting nailed down and part of

Wednesday 11 Fourteen men with Mr. K. at work Second story ceiled all around Second
office finished partitions position of stairs opened up. Covering left unfinished from yesterday
finished Vestibule leading to shop formed and some fixtures made and ceiling done. Some
scafolding [sic] on the outside around the building was also put up

Thursday 12 Mr K. & F. Pynn in the forenoon prepared the roof in the shaping of the ends of
the covering for the felt and in the afternoon with the help of eight other men the work of
covering with felt was satisfactorily finished.

Mr. K. working alone put up work bench in the morning and began making window
boxes.

Mr. Kelland fitted in place the two show window boxes and put in position the front facing with
cornice etc over the said windows. Francis Pynn & Wm J Driscoll used up what V-joint board

Miss Thistle trunks who will teach at Sibleys Cove spent this afternoon painting the [?] around
arch way between the two offices with green Paint and thus ended the work of the third

boards from around it and at evening helped Noah Driscol (who spent afternoon) hauling sand
and gathering stone for steps leading to shop

Friday 12 Mr K. put the glass in the two office doors helped about the stairs and fitted the tops
so as they may be glued together

up the tops & prepared pcs for gripping the tops when glued Noah Driscoll & Chesley spent
the forenoon finishing the front step and partily made one block for the foundation of the
wing

Saturday 13 Noah spent about 4 hrs at work dug a hole and built one box for concret [sic] for
a pillar and it being fine spent rest of day at fish. Joseph Clark spent about 8 or 9 hrs removing

Mr. K. & N. G. removed the counters from the loft to the shop Glued the tops painted them
all except panels [sic].
Mr. K whent [sic] home at evening.
Geo. Mansfield was at work at stairs putting pcs. around end of loft and did some finishing but

Chimney & spent the afternoon removing goods from old to new store where nearly of the
business of the day was done for first time

down [facing] for top story dressed up & painted blocks for the same
Geo M. Nathnl. G. spent the day clapboarding doing so as far down as scaffolding would allow
them about 5 ft J Driscoll in the afternoon painted the eve all along the side with white
Joseph C. JB.M & Wm.H.G. spent the day taking down old shop The roof is now taken of
[sic] lofting taken up and the ends taken down to beams

Wednesday 24 Mr. K. put in block of red & white under facing & finished one of sizing board
so as to give side its proper appearance W.JD. finished painting the first fleet of clapboard and
then the scafolding [sic] was lowered several feet and during the day that distance between was
very nearly done by Geo. M – N.G. & W J.D.
Wm H.G. Joseph & Jabez Clark & J.BM. with Wm Barrett very nearly spent the day taking
down & removing the debris of old shop which was cleared away to a finish and holes digged
for concrete pillars for foundation of wing soon to be put on

Thursday 25 Cannot keep quite in touch with work today but Nath G. & Geo. Mansfield
finished the side to within a days work for one and WJ.D did the painting to above the lower
windows & evening he fell of [sic] of a barrel while painting and greatly injured his shoulder
Mr. Kelland put on the end facings and base board and lined out the foundation for the wings
having spent much of the day with Wm HG. John B. Mansfie [sic] Wm. Barrett & Joseph &
Jabez Clark who was engaged at the work of hauling sand & mixing concrete the pillars for it
having been digged & built

Saturday 27 Nathnl. Goodwin & Geo. Mansfield Jr. spent the day at work on eaves under
cover of West end. [?] Mr. K assisted Wm H Goodwin Joseph Clark & Jno. B. Mansfield at
the wing until his going home in the afternoon. The end of the old office was take down without
removing the ceiling of yellow pine from it & that was again put in position for the new the side
was posted out and all the sleepers laid and thus endeth the work for the week

noon and afterward these two assisted Mr K. getting ready the couples for the wing which was
put on also JB.M J.C. & WH.G. put sleepers all through and otherwise assisted in putting on
the rafters

and partily fitted the opening for the receiving & giving out of mail matter he also removed
Some hard pine Ceiling from old office.

Tuesday 7. Wm. Barrett spent the day at office again having faced the opening on the inside of
letter receptacle faced inside & outside the door of the office & hanged it. JB.M. finished the
shelves in the store & built a box for to contain oats. G.C.M. & Wm H.G spent the day put on
the eaves under the covering of shop on east side. Mr. K. was also engaged at this work until
noon when E.C. Janes came to remove the tel office & then he spent the afternoon assisting him.

afternoon & will remain at home a week Ere coming down again to finish a few things on the

whitewashing pailings Fish very scarce on our grounds None got with hook or traps Benj.

steamed here from Old Perlican in his motor boat remd.an hour and left again the rain

particularly those with trawls Wm Goodwin trapped [11?] Tubs & Woodland 1 qtl.

Tuesday July 1 Fine day with light wind Traps hauled in the morning averaged something more
than a qtl each. At even very good catches were taken Esau Harris 10 qtls J.B.M & W.H.G.
abot [sic] 6 each J Clark 5 others fair catches prospects good. Heard at noon from Schnr.
Garnishee from Lancy Meadows via Griquet where she arrived on 27th ult leaving Hants Hr.
on Monday 16 she experienced a difficult time to get along owing to ice. She reports good sign
fish.

Thursday 10th Still very warm all day with light wind. Mr. Simonson the refined Oil inspector

at even N.D.13 in the morning these were the best catches for the day

until even the Rev. Mr. Paine & his son Carman also visited us for a little while Elisha with
Johney accompanying him left for H.Hr. at noon attended a meeting of Ag. Board and retd. at

reported to be seen at evening. Horse & cart as far as Sibly Cove with goods & hauled home
first cured fish. At dusk had to go in search for Johney who was [trouting?] – at [N.B.? Pond?]
and found him safely returning home. Mrs W J Driscoll sister & two little girls arrived her [sic]
on a visit from Boston today.

plentiful than at any time in the past. Geo Mansfield trapped 60 qtls W.H. Goodwin 25 qtls

N D. a few qtls E.H. 2 qtls Diamond 4 [qtls] Clark a few qtls others on the shore eaqually [sic]
well Trap men report never saw more.
Sml. short's motor boat & skiff was here at 2 pm with 13 hhds. salt and Malcolm short his wife
& his cousin [Bedkar?] short with a Miss Snelgrove of Catalina visited us at noon and remained
for a few hrs. At night our two boys Snelgrove & Wheeler had to travel to H. Hr for Dr. Barrs
to assist Elisha' wife in Child birth

Tuesday 5 A dull day with strong s.E. wind for a few hrs. at evening. Fish was not so plentiful
to day still T.[G.?] had 40 qtls am and 12 qtls at noon S.W. abt 3 qtls morn noon & Even
G.M. similar I. Point N.D. & E.H. did practically nothing two or three tubs each J.B.M. &
others got a few tubs only. Caplin still plenty beyond Indian Point
At 8 a.m. a baby boy was born to Elisha & wife

Wednesday 6 A beautiful fine day with Westerly wind blowing a nice breeze all day.
Considerable fish was traped [sic] by the men of Brownsdale HTA leading with 30 qtls others
10 to 15 qtls here Z..R. & G.M. & Wm. G. trapped 5 qtls. each others lesser amounts I.R.
traps weren't hauled by any of the parties fishing there fishing there thought to have ended for
this season
Some caplin still about but getting very scarce
Mr. & Mrs Hatcher visited us at evening on the way to Hants Hr.

Thursday 7 A fine day until evening it became cloudy Not much doing with fish today a little
got by some parties at B. Noel Driscoll took in bottom & leader of trap at I.P. and W.H.G.
took up entirely the one at the Scraig Rocks. E.K also took in part of Mr. Jas Goodwin left in
motor boat at evening early morg for goods for us but owing to strong wind did not get back
again until even.

Thursday 14 Fine & warm wind light & variable [Mort?] Mansfiel [sic] Z. Reid A Armstrong
& Thorns took in their trap. W.H.G. trapped 4 Tubs the only taken here. Nothing doing with
hook No squid yet for bait Diamond reported two or three small schools of caplin to be seen
in sands. Johney left at 7:30 am for Old Perlican to get mare shod returnd soon after dinner At
even weighed in store 13 ½ qtls fish for Mansfields Servants cutting grass in lower garden by
the brook, & stabled what was cut around dwellings. Mr. Sinnott of Placentia visited us at 11
am respecting the buying of berries

traps as did also Geo Mansfied [sic] Wm H.G. took up one fished by him so that only one

Tuesday 26 A splendid day with light west wind. A few men fishing and altho having little squid
bait found fish very scarce and reports the grounds becoming very scarce of cod our horse
was to Lead Cove with flour & cement after hauled 34 qtls of fish from Diamond to store and
at evening took niece Bertie Goodwin to H.Hr. where she will stay to night & leave from there
to morrow for Toronto.
Revs. Messrs. Richards & Adams visited us at 11 a.m. on their way to H.Hr. and inspected the
church throughout. The day was a very busy one with us all through

Wed. 27 Fairly fine but not quite equal to yesterday. The day was a busy one as we weighed
considerable fish and at night arranged with Wm. Harris of schnr. Lucinda to take onboard a

Thursday 28 A dull day with strong s. wind for a while until noon it droped and then showers
of rain. Wm H. Button with Jas. Goodwin acping him was to H.Hr in his motor for a little goods

evening Johney returned from his visit to H.Hr. & Master Ed. Short came with him. Elisha &
servants busy all day at oil whilst I attended to business Hez. Snelgrove of G. Cove visited us
for a little while. Fish buying & politics general topic.

Friday 29 Sunshining in the morning but dampening owing to the rain of last night At breakfast
hour it became misty again & continued until noon when it clared up & became spendidly fine
with strong westerly wind. The Schnr. Lucinda came to take freight in themorning proceeded
to Brownsdale where I weighed 130 ½ qtls & then to Whales Brook & weigh 44 [qtls] by this
time it was dusk & I hastened home again

Saturday 30 Left about 6:30 am for whales Brook and weighed about 70 qtls & then returned
home & spent the rest of the day filling up the Lucinda here, and she left at about 6:30 pm.
Wm. Burton & his two sons came here at dusk in their motor boat with 12 Brls. Flour & c. &
Brl. Mols. & her supply of oil having given out had to let her stay over all night

Goodwin and attended to other business Our servant boys spent the day cutting the grass in
Cemetery The Visiting of Sir. R. Bond & Coaker in politics was the talk of the evening.

came to take fish for some parties at Brownsdale & had to return again F. Pynn was at work

W.A. Munn visited us again in the morning and had a word about berries. Several of our men

Monday Fine & very warm several lots of fish was taken again to day but the day was
generally spent removing goods from old to new store and doing business there Dr. & Mrs.
Macdonald & child too who had spent Sunday at H.Hr visited us again in the afternoon as did
also Doctor Barrs They performed a surgical operation & removed a diseased eye from Jas.
Goodwin sr boys Max who had suffered with it for two yrs. or more.

Tuesday 23rd Another very fine day with light s.w. wind and a little sea on at first so that the I.
Rock would break some times. This was the first all day spent in new shop and was a pleasant
& successful one many customers around & pleased with building etc.

Wed. 24th Schnr Rambler came here at 9 am discharged 50 Brls Flour lumber & other goods
& left at 11 am for Sibly Cove where I weighed unboard of her 160 qtls fish and returned
again at night Jos Clark having driven me there & brought me home again. The day was
beautifully fine with light West wind which caused the day to be a very busy one with us all

Thursday 25th A beautiful fine day wind & temperature same as yesterday. Lef in the early
morning again for Sibleys Cove Elisha accompanying me Joseph Clark with horse & wagon
driving us I finished loading the Schnr. Rambler having weighed unboard of her qtls making
a total of Elisah also weighed onboard the Schnr. R.W.G. at Lead Cove qtls fish
these schnrs. left at dusk for Old Perlican and we returned home by the same conveyance
having come for us and arrived soon after nigh fell

Friday 26 Weather wind & temperature like yesterday sea beautifully smoothe Schnr.
Garnishee came here in the early morning weighed unboard of her qtls fish also put onboard
Cask Oil 50 Pun Hoops 250 flour brl shooks Schnr. filled at 5 pm. Had a good Crew for
helping The schrs had in when she came here 1 qtls of her voyage soft cure. She remained all
night and left in the early morning for st John's.
The Schnr. Undaunted was also here & discarged [sic] on our premises a few M lumber for
J.C. Driscoll

Saturday 27 A dull & lowry day with heavy atmosphere sultry & dead heat most oppressive,
this season At evening & night it rained almost continuously The schooner Lucinda came here
for breakfast hour and discharged two skiff loads of lumber. Wife, Johney, & Clarence with
Wm. Barrett accompanyin [sic] them left at same time for Broad Cove to spend a few days.
The day all three was exceptionally busy with us all and at evening the assistance of the school
teachers on the shore Misses Thistle & Crumy who with Miss Pugh proved of much service to
us they each having helped us considerably.

Tuesday 7th A little fine in the forenoon but at evening their [sic] was light rain for a time. All
evening the wind veered up from the North and at night it blew strong. Miss Molly Pugh left for
home at noon & was driven as far as Winterton by Clb. Reid her sister our teacher accmpy her
as did also Mrs. Elisha as far as HHr. The F.P.U. steamer Kintail was also here in the
afternoon with supplies for Union folk. Mr. E.G. Janes came here at noon and spent until dusk
& removed the telegraph to the new office Joseph Clark and James Goodwin Sr. assisted him
in his work.

funnelling for office & spent half of today putting them up & fitting in a [slider?] for letters

Tuesday 28 Mr. Kelland finished the drawers & began the making of the opening from postal
to private offices Wm.H.G. finished the shelves & the making of the paper holders

October 29, Wednesday Mr Kelland finished the opening refered [sic] to yesterday in my
office and whent home in afternoon & WmH. Goodwin sawed the opening in the loft for the
funnelling and otherwise prepared it for such. In the afternoon he remained at home.

Nov. Monday 3 Mr. Kelland arrived in the afternoon and spent the evening facing and making
& hanging door in the Tel office to connect with one in my office
