The lieutenant-governor, by virtue of the role, is designated as the official visitor to the university.
In accordance with the Memorial University Act, the chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university and as such represents the university to the province, the country and the world. The chancellor is also charged with promoting the university’s well-being and that of the university community – students, faculty, staff and alumni. He/she is also vested with the degree-granting power of the university and presides over convocation.
The Board of Regents of Memorial University is responsible for the overall conduct, management, administration and control of the property, revenue and business of the university. It comprises 27 volunteer members appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council (provincial government cabinet), 17 of whom are selected by government, four of whom are students selected by student unions, six who are alumni elected and three who serve ex officio (chancellor, president and provost.)
The university’s Senate is responsible for the approval of new programs and the granting of degrees and diplomas, setting academic regulations and establishing the academic calendar. Its membership includes 80 faculty, and students, as well as senior university administrators who serve ex officio.
