The lieutenant-governor, by virtue of his role, is designated as the official visitor to the university.

Board of Regents

The Board of Regents of Memorial University is responsible for the overall conduct, management, administration and control of the property, revenue and business of the university. It comprises 27 volunteer members, 21 of whom are appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council (provincial government cabinet), six who are elected by almuni and three who serve as ex officio.


The university’s Senate is responsible for the approval of new programs and the granting of degrees and diplomas, setting academic regulations and establishing the academic calendar.
