Governance and administration
Memorial University was established in 1925, when it opened as a college dedicated to the memory of the dead of the First World War.
When Newfoundland became a province of Canada in 1949, the new government immediately made the college a university.
The university is governed by its constitution which is itself part of an Act of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland.
An Act Respecting the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Chap. 231, Revised Statutes of Newfoundland (as amended), delineates the authority and the functions of the University and its parts.
