WCS/C&C launch Public Engagement siteWeb Content Services and Computing and Communications have launched a joint project, www.mun.ca/publicengagement/. The new site provides a new look and feel for the Office of Public Engagement, a branch of Memorial University that focuses on collaboration between the University and the pubic. Everyone is encouraged to take a peek at the website, especially their calendar of events for Engage Memorial Week (February 12-15) and their Success Stories page, specially created by WCS’s Web Specialist, Tyrel Jennings, to highlight just a few of the public engagement stories of Memorial’s faculty and staff members. If you or your department is interested in setting up a new templated website or giving your existing site a fresh new look and feel, contact the Web Content Editor at webeditor@mun.ca. |

Did you know...?When adding content to Site Builder, a great tool to use is the “Link files” feature. This allows users to click from page to page on their site as well as direct users to related information. Users are able to link internal files (files created or uploaded to Site Builder) or external files (email address to URLS). Step 1: To create a link, the user must first highlight either the text or image they want to create a link from. Then click on the “Link” icon, which looks like a chain, in the bank of icons above the content area. Once you’ve clicked on the “Link” icon, the “Insert/edit link” window will open. From this window, you select which type of link you wish to make, either an internal link (can be selected from the drop-down list) or an external link (the URL of the external website or Email address). Note: Internal links can be any file you create in Site Builder (.php file, PDF, .doc, .mp3, .ppt) and can be selected from the “Internal” drop-down list. Step 2: Once you have finished, click the “Insert” button at the bottom left-hand side of the window. Note: When adding an email address as a link, if you omit the required “mailto:” prefix, you will be prompted to have the prefix added for you before Site Builder accepts any changes. You will also be prompted by Site Builder if you have not added the “http://” prefix for an external link. Simply click on “OK” and Site Builder will make the required changes for you. Did you know...?‘Related Links’ is a great feature that allows users to add links to pages related to the content of that page. Users can use this feature to highlight relevant pages within their site or point to interesting external sites or useful files. ‘Related Links’ appear on the top-right of a finished page. Here are the steps to create a related link: Step 1 - If you haven't already done so, create a new page or open an existing page. Step 2 - Scroll to the bottom of your screen. At the bottom of the page you will see a series of blank spaces with the headings 'Link Text' and 'Link URL'. (If these spaces are not already visible, click on “Related Links” in the gold bar on the left.) Step 3 - Type the text you want to appear (ex: “Past issues” in the above example) in the left space called Link Text. This is the text that will appear in the Related Links box on your page. Step 4A - Insert the web page address, or URL (including 'http://') in the space at the right. OR Step 4B - If you are linking to something within your own site use relative links. To do this, use this syntax: ../sectionname/filename.ext in this example, sectionname indicates the section the file is in, filename is the file's name, and ext is the extension (filetype) of your file (ex: php, pdf, doc) Step 5 - Save your page. To view these instructions with pictures, please follow this link. If you have any questions or concerns, email webeditor@mun.ca. |

Site Builder auto-formatting featureIt has been brought to the attention of Web Content Services that when a user is entering or editing content through Site Builder and hits the ‘Enter’ key, Site Builder will automatically start a new paragraph as opposed to starting a new line. For example, Site Builder will do this when you press ‘Enter’ at the end of a sentence: Billy’s parents gave him a bike for his birthday. Billy rode his new bike to school to show it to all of his friends. To start a new line as follows, simply press ‘Shift’ and then ‘Enter’: Billy’s parents gave him a bike for his birthday. If you have any questions or concerns, email webeditor@mun.ca. |

A very useful new feature in Site Builder!CCweb implemented a number of small improvements to Site Builder today, one of which, we think, will make users very happy. If you see a broken link, or wish to make a change, on a live page you own, simply click on 'last Updated Date' in the page footer. Clicking on this will bring you directly into the Editor for that specific page so you can make changes in one step! The only proviso is that you must log in (if you are not already logged in) to Site Builder and have permission to edit that page. A small feature, but one I think you will take advantage of! Of course, if you see a problem, email webeditor@mun.ca. For more information see https://builder.ucs.mun.ca/help/new_features.php |
