Campbell in conversation

Dr. Eddy Campbell is preparing for the latest challenge in his life: taking on the role of the University of New Brunswick’s newest president, which he will do at summer’s end. Dr. Campbell recently sat down with Memorial’s associate director of communications, Ivan Muzychka, to reflect on his time spent here. The conversation touched on Dr. Campbell’s connection to Memorial, this province and the limitless potential ahead as we continue to focus on teaching, research and service. He believes there are many ways Memorial will be able to collaborate with the University of New Brunswick in order to develop a strong, healthy, vibrant, prosperous and safe Atlantic Canada. Power of poetry

       

The Jeroboam and Gregory J. Power Awards for Poetry were presented at a ceremony hosted by the Department of English in the Junior Common Room April 8. This year’s winners are Randy Drover who was awarded The Jeroboam Poetry Prize, for a poem on a Newfoundland or Labrador theme, for Ugjoktok - 1940; Lynette Adams, who took first place in the Gregory J. Power Award for her poem The Second Sight; Randy Drover, again, who received the second place Power Award for The Barber’s Apprentice; Kyle Carpenter, with the third place Power Award, for Ferrying; and Nigel Jenkins, with an honourable mention in the Power Award, for Twilight. Greg Malone can add one more achievement to his long -- and varied -- list of accomplishments. The actor, director, activist and honorary degree recipient (he received an honorary doctor of letters from Memorial in 2000) has just penned his childhood autobiography. You Better Watch Out was published by Random House. Studio 1024 co-host Jeff Green talked with Dr. Malone about the book, plus his passion for history, why he's fascinated with this province's confederation with Canada, his future writing plans and the hope of getting vintage episodes of The Wonderful Grand Band and Codco (shows he was instrumental with) onto DVD. Dr. David SuzukiActivist, writer and broadcaster Dr. David Suzuki was at Memorial recently to help kick-off the Students for Sustainability National Campus Tour. With the federal election only days away, he told students to ensure they get out there and vote and make the environment a priority. Dr. Axel Meisen ends his term as Memorial’s seventh president on Dec. 31, 2007. He was first appointed in 1999. During his time, the university
has experienced much growth: research funding has increased; student enrolment has risen; new innovative programs and disciplines have been created; and new services to students have been introduced. Dr. Eddy Campbell, Memorial’s vice-president (academic), will serve as acting president, effective Jan. 1, 2008. Here, in this special interview, Studio 1024 Executive Producer Ivan Muzychka sits down for an in-depth one-on-one conversation with Dr. Meisen to talk about his time at Memorial and his plans for the future.
