Director, Public Affairs
I’m director of public affairs for Memorial University of Newfoundland (within the Division of Marketing and Communications).
A native of St. John’s and graduate of Memorial University (BA), I have worked in communications for more than three decades.
I started my career working in radio and television in the late-1970s in St. John’s.
I served in senior communications roles with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador throughout the 1980s, working in departments responsible for economic development, tourism, and finance.
I came to Memorial University in 1989 as manager of information services. In 1997, I was named associate director (communications) and in 2004 promoted to director, public affairs.
As director of public affairs with Memorial, I’m responsible for strategic communications and issues management in the areas of government relations, policy and planning.
I’m a former vice-president and current active member of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education and a member of the international Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and served as past vice-president of the Newfoundland and Labrador chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
I’ve served on the board of the Memorial University Recreation Complex, CHMR-FM and the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
A member of the Rotary Club of St. John’s I serve as the chair of its Public Relations Committee.
I enjoy golf (member of Bally Haly Golf Club), downhill skiing, music and writing. I’m married to Sally Ackerman and we have one son, Christopher.
