SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold spring convocation from May 25-27, 2005

Memorial University will be holding its annual spring convocation from May 25-27, 2005, in the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre. Over 2,000 degrees will be awarded at the seven sessions of convocation.

The convocation ceremonies will also see honorary degrees awarded to outstanding men and women drawn from the worlds of business, science, public life and the arts. The honorary graduands include: distinguished author and editor Dr. David Pitt; professor of sport science Dr. Gudrun Doll-Tepper; businessman Ches Penney; cultural theorist Dr. Henry Giroux; naturalist and conservationist Dr. Bernard Jackson and former St. John’s mayor and businessman John Murphy.

Humanitarian and soldier Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire was to receive an honorary degree on May 25 but unexpectedly had to cancel his trip to St. John’s. He will receive his degree at a future session of convocation.

Comedian and writer Rick Mercer was recognized with an honorary doctor of letters at the Grenfell College convocation held on May 13, 2005. In the fall convocation 2005, slated for Oct. 21, 2005, in St. John’s, honorary degrees will be awarded to Scott Hand, chairman and CEO of Inco Ltd., and Elizabeth Penashue, a community activist in Labrador.

Memorial's president, Dr. Axel Meisen, will deliver his report to convocation during the 10 a.m.session of convocation on Friday, May 27. For further information about convocation, please visit www.mun.ca.
