SUBJECT: Student Recruitment announces winners of Celebrate Memorial 2004 essay/video contest
DATE: Nov. 3
Kimberley Sword of Holy Spirit High School in Paradise and Ashley Tarrant of Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn are the winners of a province-wide essay and video contest sponsored by Memorial University. The contest was part of the Celebrate Memorial festivities which were held from Oct. 21–29, 2004. Memorial’s Office of Student Recruitment invited Grade 12 students throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to communicate their thoughts about Memorial and the community. In keeping with this year’s theme, Connecting to the Community, students were asked to write an essay or submit a video on how Memorial has helped to position an individual graduate to give back to his/her community or how the university as a whole has or can contribute to the community.
Ms. Sword won for the essay portion and Ms. Tarrant for her video submission. Each winner will receive one semester’s tuition at Memorial. Memorial University and the Office of Student Recruitment would like to thank all those who participated in the essay/video contest, including distinguished judges, Prof. Shane O’Dea, English; Mike Collins, honours English student and communications co-ordinator (student recruitment), Kristine Hamlyn.
