SUBJECT: This weekend is full of MUNdays

DATE: Oct. 19,2012

MUNdays celebrations continue today and into the weekend on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, it’s Community Service Learning Day. Students, staff and faculty will serve up a hot meal at the Street Reach Community, be kind to Mother Earth by taking part in a cleanup at Topsail Beach with the Marine Institute’s Ocean Net team and care for the community’s critters at the SPCA.

At 12 p.m., the Memorial community will do it up American-style with the first ever pre-game Sea-Hawks Tailgate Party at King George V field at Quidi Vidi. Shuttle buses will transport the crowd from R. Gushue Hall to the pitch for a barbecue, local Celtic folk rockers the Rolling Kings, prizes and more. Then it’s the main event: the men’s and women’s Sea-Hawks soccer teams will take on St. Francis of Xavier for some serious field action.

And that’s not all: at half-time the hugely popular Out Move Sammy competition goes down. Can Sammy the Sea-Hawk shake his tail feathers hard enough to out move and out groove all the challenging residence mascot contenders? Don’t miss it! Winner takes $1,000!

On Sunday, Oct. 21, hearts (and everything else) will get pumping during the 5K MUN Run at 8 a.m. Throngs of like-minded fitness enthusiasts will enjoy a runner’s high for five kilometres around the St. John’s campus.

After the run, the Sea-Hawks’ battle it out in another double-header soccer match against St. Francis of Xavier at King George V at Quidi Vidi at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Go Sea-Hawks! Red means go!

On Monday, Oct. 22, from 12-3 p.m., everyone’s favourite culinary event is on at The Landing in the University Centre. A feast of some of the most delicious fare from around the globe will be served up at the International Bazaar. Then at 3:30 p.m., it’s the Rant Like Rick finals -- a MUNdays classic. Watch as one Memorial student is crowned this year’s rant champ and receives a cool $1,000 for their best rant. The rant off goes down in The Breezeway.

And today, Friday, Oct. 19, Kindness Friday continues. Students, faculty and staff will demonstrate their own acts of kindness, as well as bring in non-perishable food items to Hatcher House to help Memorial Fill the Square at Paton College. All food will be donated to the Campus Food Bank.

Convocation takes place at the Arts and Culture Centre at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Congrats, grads!

This evening, the Memorial University students’ union (MUNSU) Graduation Concert is at 8 p.m. at the Breezeway.

MUNdays highlights the diversity, ingenuity, excellence, kindness and community spirit that distinguish Memorial as one of the best post-secondary institutions in the world.

A full slate of events and activities are planned, encouraging students, staff, faculty and alumni to come together, celebrate Memorial and have an unforgettable time.

Complete schedules, including dates, locations and times for all events are available online at www.mun.ca/mundays/schedule/, www.swgc.mun.ca/celebrate/Pages/default.aspx and www.mi.mun.ca/MIMUNdays/schedule/.
