|SUBJECT:||Marine Institutes Ocean Net hosts Topsail Beach cleanup this week|
|DATE:||Sept. 20, 2012|
Note to editors:
The Marine Institutes (MI) Ocean Net will collaborate with volunteers from community groups, divers, youth and government departments this Friday to conduct a beach, shoreline and underwater cleanup of the Topsail beach area. The media is welcome to attend these events.
Protecting our sensitive marine ecosystems and fostering clean oceans is essential in providing the resources our coastal communities depend on, said Justin Dearing, conference co-ordinator, MI Ocean Net. These cleanups engage a provincewide network of volunteers and communities while promoting the sustainability, innovation and leadership of our marine environments.
Activities will begin with a welcoming address at Topsail Beach, Conception Bay South, at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 21, with a beach cleanup to follow at 11 a.m.
Participants will enjoy face painting, a mussel boil, barbecue and snacks.
All volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy footwear, pack a lunch, bring water and wear appropriate clothing in case of changing weather conditions. Gloves and bags will be provided.
