SUBJECT: Atlantic Canada’s top biotech whiz kids square off in 2012 Atlantic Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada Competition

DATE: April 24,2012

Extraordinary teenage scientists from schools across Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and will compete for top honours on April 25 in the Atlantic region’s 2012 Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada (SBCC) event, a national biotechnology research competition which inspires students to pursue future studies and careers in the exciting field of biotechnology. Coordinated by Bioscience Education Canada since its beginning in 1993, in Newfoundland and Labrador the initiative is coordinated by Memorial’s Genesis Group. The NL teams were sponsored by Memorial University and its Marine Institute as well as by the provincial government.
The Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada gives high school and CEGEP students from across Canada the chance to pour their creativity, curiosity and scientific skills into cutting-edge research projects that tackle some of the day’s toughest challenges – from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease to crops and the environment. The winner of this competition will advance to the national competition held at the National Research Council headquarters in Ottawa on May 7, 2012.
Ken Coffey, the coordinator with Genesis, said “we have four great teams from this province who have worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of science. Each team was supported by committed mentors from Memorial. Drs. Gary Paterno, Karen Mearow and Mani Larijani from Medicine, Dr. Kelly Hawboldt from Engineering and Dr. Bob Helleur from Chemistry. We have our eye on the national award.”
