REF NO.: 25

SUBJECT: Memorial University business student selected by Global Vision to attend APEC 2011

DATE: Oct. 3,2011

Commerce student Samantha Phelan has been chosen by Global Vision to represent Canada's youth at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Voices of the Future (APEC VOF) leadership development program. The program will run parallel with the APEC summit in Honolulu, Hawaii, from Nov. 7-13, 2011.
Under the theme Engage, Discover, Forge, the APEC Voices of the Future 2011 will provide youth with opportunities for networking and interaction on APEC-related issues. The participating youth will have events scheduled all day from Monday to Saturday. Some of the events planned include a tour of a Russian sailing training vessel and attendance at the Asia Pacific Business Symposium. The most notable event will be attendance at the APEC summit itself, which will be hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama.
At the end of the week, Ms. Phelan and the other Canadian students will have a debriefing session with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. There, the chosen youth will discuss what they have accomplished and the business contacts they made.
As part of attending, Ms. Phelan needs to raise $5000 from sponsors across the country. Since Ms. Phelan is an invited guest at these events, she can do a sponsor company’s dealmaking and networking for them.
“Sponsorship of this opportunity is an investment, in that it has the potential to radically alter your business for the better, providing new growth, or even a new competitive edge at one of the most influential conferences in the world,” said Ms. Phelan.
All participating youth for the APEC VOF program are selected from the 21 APEC Economies: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States and Vietnam. Ms. Phelan was one of just three selected for Canada.
