REF NO.: 191
|SUBJECT:||Memorial University hosts young science enthusiasts for first All Science Challenge competition|
|DATE:||April 29, 2011|
More than 100 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students from across the Avalon will participate in a day-long science enrichment competition at Memorial University on May 3. The All Science Challenge will see students from 11 St. Johns-area schools take part in a fun-filled day of competition and camaraderie thats part of the nationwide Lets Talk Science Outreach program to inspire the next generation.
Following the opening ceremonies, teams will participate in two rounds of questions with professors, staff and university students serving as judges. Students will test their knowledge in a range of disciplines, such as earth sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry and physics.
In the afternoon, teams will compete in a hands-on design activity, where they are challenged to build an object with the materials supplied to them. For example, during a past All Science Challenge, students were tasked with building a bridge capable of holding a bottle full of water using only plastic cups, post-it notes and duct tape. The top three teams will then face off in a final elimination round. The last team standing will become the All Science Challenge Champion.
The All Science Challenge will take place Tuesday, May 3, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Photo opportunities and interviews will be available during the design challenge (12 1 p.m.) in Chemistry/Physics Building, room C-2039, and during the final elimination round starting at 1:15 p.m. in Innovation Hall, Bruneau Centre for Research.
