SUBJECT: Memorial University wins international communication awards

            Memorial University is a three-time winner of the prestigious 2011 Gold Quill Award for excellence in business communication, presented by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Memorial’s 2010 research report, The Shining, captured an Award of Excellence for Best Photography and an Award of Merit for Best Publication Design. Memorial’s signature recruitment publication, A Zagger’s Guide to Memorial University, received an Award of Merit in the publications category. 
            For more than 35 years, IABC’s annual Gold Quill Awards program has honoured the best of the best in business communication, offering professional communicators an opportunity to have their work evaluated by expert judges. The winners represent excellence in organizational communication and their work plans serve as best practices for professional communicators across communication disciplines.
            This year’s competition was sponsored by Towers Watson and received nearly 900 entries from 26 countries. Of these, 100 were selected to receive Awards – 34 Awards of Excellence, 65 Awards of Merit and one Student Award. The winners will be honoured at the Gold Quill Awards gala dinner on June 13 at the IABC 2011 World Conference in San Diego, California.
            The Shining is Memorial’s 2010 Research Report. It used movie titles as an entrée to the specialized worlds of Memorial’s research “stars” and describes some of the significant university research projects of 2009-2010. Drs. Pat Parfrey and Sean Brosnan donned fedoras and overcoats to become Goodfellas, in a story about being named Fellows of the Royal Society; while Drs. Kurt Gamperl and Ian Fleming braved the frigid ocean in tuxedos for Ocean’s Sixteen, in recognition of federal/provincial investments of more than $16 million to expand and enhance the Ocean Sciences Centre. Twenty-two projects were highlighted in the report and feedback from alumni and community partners has noted the “smart design and witty and conversational text” and “brilliant idea.”
            “At its heart, research is about curiosity and creatively applying new ideas and approaches to important issues and questions. We wanted to reflect that in the way we tell our story, conveying the message that research at Memorial truly is a creative, enjoyable and highly valued enterprise,” explained Dr. Christopher Loomis, vice-president (research). “The Shining’s success adds to Memorial’s and this province’s reputation as place of creativity and excellence.”
             “It’s an honour for our team to be recognized with such a prestigious award like the Gold Quill,” says Shona Perry-Maidment, director, Office of Student Recruitment. “One of the goals of redesigning A Zagger’s Guide to Memorial University, our main recruitment publication, was to set ourselves apart from other universities. We have definitely achieved that goal and set the bar to a whole new level.”
            A Zagger’s Guide to Memorial University, the 2010-2011 undergraduate student recruitment viewbook, was developed using a new creative concept. The new aesthetic and a new name provided an engaging and irreverent approach to presenting Memorial to youthful adventure seekers, using visuals and language that would be appealing to their demographic. The primary goal of this publication is to illustrate to prospective students and their key influencers what Memorial University has to offer students who choose to study here, in a manner that depicts Memorial with a special light and lens, and allows prospective students to make an informed decision. 
            The Gold Quill Award entries went through two rigorous rounds of judging by top senior communicators from around the world. The final selection was made by the Gold Quill Awards Blue Ribbon Panel of judges in March. To win the Gold Quill Awards, Memorial competed with peers from 26 countries including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Philippines, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the U.S.
            “The Gold Quill Awards is one of the few opportunities for communicators to have their work recognized at a global level,” says Melissa Dark, ABC, chair of the 2011 Gold Quill Awards. “The awards recognize work done in the many and varied facets of the business communication profession, but in all areas it is primarily concerned with demonstrating how the communicator has added value to their business through strategic, innovatively-executed and thoroughly-measured communication activity. As in previous years, this year we had entries from all across the world, in four different languages from communicators all keen to see their work evaluated against the gold standard of IABC’s awards program. Those who have won can be justly proud of having their work recognized at this international level.”
