SUBJECT: Harris Centre road show hits Portugal Cove - St. Philip’s
DATE: Feb. 1, 2011

Memorial University’s Harris Centre is on the road.
Since last month, the centre has been travelling to communities all over Newfoundland and Labrador, sharing locally-relevant research projects conducted by Memorial and co-ordinated by the centre, including a project highlighting the potential for neighbouring communities to work together on regionally-beneficial projects.
The next stop along the way will be a presentation in Portugal Cove -St. Philip’s at a town council committee meeting Tuesday, Feb. 8.
“This session is an opportunity to share cutting edge research on regional development,” said Dr. Rob Greenwood, director of the Harris Centre. “This work provides key insights on how municipalities in the province are actually functioning as highly integrated regional economies, and how our governance tools are adapting to keep up.
“It also highlights how rural areas stack up in the knowledge-based economy, and what they can do to make the most of opportunities,” he said.
Accompanying Dr. Greenwood will be the Harris Centre’s new Manager of Knowledge Mobilization Bojan Fürst. He’s looking forward to meeting with regional development workers across the province.
“A major element of my job at the Harris Centre is to broker connections, using Yaffle.ca, our online project match-making tool, and through face-to-face sessions like these,” said Mr. Fürst. “We’re conducting presentations all across the province this winter and spring. In addition to sharing research findings, we will be asking what needs and opportunities exist in the communities and what Memorial faculty, staff and students can do to help.”
