Memorial Universitys Harris Centre is hitting the road. Starting this month in Gander, the centre will travel to communities all over Newfoundland and Labrador, sharing locally-relevant research projects conducted by Memorial and co-ordinated by the Harris Centre.
With specific research on the Gander, Twillingate-New World Island and Lewisporte regions, the first stop will be a meeting in Gander with the members of the Kittiwake Economic Development Corporation on Friday, Jan. 21.
This session is an opportunity to share cutting edge research on regional development, said Dr. Rob Greenwood, director of the Harris Centre Director. This work provides key insights on how municipalities in the province are actually functioning as highly integrated regional economies, and how our governance tools are adapting to keep up.
It also highlights how rural areas stack up in the knowledge-based economy, and what they can do to make the most of opportunities, he said.
Accompanying Dr. Greenwood will be the Harris Centres new Manager of Knowledge Mobilization Bojan Fürst. Hes looking forward to meeting with regional development workers across the province.
A major element of my job at the Harris Centre is to broker connections, using Yaffle.ca, our online project match-making tool, and through face-to-face sessions like these, said Mr. Fürst. Were doing these presentations all across the province this winter and spring. In addition to sharing research findings, we will be asking what needs and opportunities exist in the communities and what Memorial faculty, staff and students can do to help.
