SUBJECT: Two Faculty of Education papers shortlisted for international research award

DATE: June 9,2010

Two research papers in Memorial University’s Faculty of Education have been shortlisted for the Best Research Paper Award at the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN) annual conference, which takes place from June 9-12 in Valencia, Spain.
Drs. Dale Kirby and Dennis Sharpe’s Intention, Transition, Retention: Examining High School Distance e-Learners’ Participation in Tertiary Education and Drs. Tim Seifert and Oana Radu’s Mathematical Intimacy within Blended and Face-to-face Learning Environments have both been nominated by the EDEN Jury as finalists.
Established in 1991 EDEN is an international educational association open to institutions and individuals dealing with e-learning, open and distance education. This year’s conference theme is Media Inspirations for Learning: What Makes the Impact?
The papers were selected amongst 50 conference papers, which were evaluated against high standard criteria.
Dr. Kirby and Dr. Sharpe’s work is conducted under the Community University Research Alliance (CURA) Transition Study, which is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The results of their three studies help to advance our understanding of how the secondary to tertiary education transitions of distance education students compare with those of other students who do not participate in distance courses in secondary school.
Dr. Seifert, Dr. Bruce Sheppard and Ann-Marie Vaughan were awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the EDEN’s 2008 annual conference in Lisbon, Portugal, for their paper entitled Examining the Effectiveness of Distance Education: Results from Multi-level Modeling.
The 2010 Best Research Award will be presented during this year’s annual conference.
