REF NO.: 30
One year after becoming the first Canadian team to win the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) World Cup, SIFE Memorial is ready to defend its title at the 2009 World Cup in Berlin, Germany, taking place Oct. 4-6.
SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) is one of the world's largest student organizations, with over 1,400 teams in more than 40 countries. These teams work to create sustainable, socially responsible projects that help to improve their communities. At the World Cup, CEOs and business leaders from around the world will evaluate each team based on their success at creating economic opportunities for others.
This is the fourth consecutive year that SIFE Memorial has won the national title and been chosen to represent Canada in the SIFE World Cup.
“We’re excited to have the opportunity to defend our world title, and the team has worked hard to ensure we are ready,” said Liam Kelly, president of SIFE Memorial. “Our results are stronger than ever before – our 12 major projects have resulted in over $1.73 million being reinvested into our province and since the last world competition, our 90 student members volunteered over 37,000 hours.”
This year’s SIFE Memorial projects include Based in Business, a partnership with the Department of National Defence; Mtmo’taqn, a three-year project aimed at preserving the culture of the province’s only Mi’kmaq reserve; and Flags, a program dedicated to helping Canadian seniors improve their financial security and independence. SIFE Memorial is currently running 12 projects that impact thousands of people in Newfoundland communities.
Dr. Dale Foster, acting dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, will be joining the students at the competition. “I’m very proud to be supporting our students and I have no doubt that they will continue to represent us well,” she said. “Their volunteerism and commitment to improving our communities is to be commended. I am bringing the support and pride of the entire university community with me to Berlin.”
The 90-member SIFE Memorial team will be represented in Berlin by 24 students, Faculty Advisor Lynn Morrissey and Dr. Foster.
SIFE Memorial is supported by Memorial University of Newfoundland, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
