|DATE:||Sept. 8, 2003|
Gary Peddle, president of the Alumni Association of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Dr. Linda Inkpen, chair of the Alumni Tribute Awards, today announced the 2003 award recipients. They will be formally recognized at a gala dinner to be held at R. Gushue Hall, St. John's Campus, on Thursday, Oct.16.
Recipients of the Alumni Tribute Awards include:
Lifetime Achievement Award:
The Honourable T. Alexander Hickman, OC, QC, LLB, LLD (Memorial University College)
Stephen Kent, BBA'01
Outstanding Professional Achievement:
Lt.-Gen. Rick Hillier, B.Sc.'76
Outstanding Community Service Award:
Maj. Dr. G. Dawn Howse, B.Med.Sci.'76, MD'78
"The selection process was challenging," said Mr. Peddle. "We had 39 exceptional nominees for these five awards and all the nominees deserve to be applauded for their contributions to society. I hope that these awards will serve as a source of encouragement for the recipients and as a significant sign that their work is not passing unnoticed either by their university or by their fellow alumni."
Dr. Inkpen added, "This is my second year as chair of the Alumni Tribute Awards and I feel privileged to be part of a process that recognizes the contributions of such remarkable people. This province, our country and indeed the world are enriched by the life and work of the thoughtful and dedicated people who have graduated from Memorial University. The Alumni Tribute Awards give us an opportunity to focus on a few of these individuals and to share their stories of service, achievement and dedication with the world."
The Alumni Tribute Awards gala, an evening of fine dining and music honouring these remarkable alumni, is a showcase for the Celebrate Memorial festivities.
