SUBJECT: Rant Like Rick campaign is back

Memorial is awarding free tuition again this year. The Office of Student Recruitment and the Division of Marketing and Communications are partnering again to bring back the Rant Like Rick marketing recruitment campaign, launched in 2007.
Ads began airing on Friday, Jan. 25, in movie theatres and on television in four select markets: St. John’s, Halifax, Ottawa and Kingston.
The ads include a contest, encouraging students across the country to submit their rant, with a chance to win free tuition. Three winners will be selected and each winner will receive a tuition voucher for two semesters at Memorial, currently valued at $2,550.
“Given the great interest in the Rant Like Rick campaign last year, we wanted to do it again this year. We think it’s a distinctive and innovative method of encouraging students to think about attending Memorial,” said Sheila Devine, director, Office of Student Recruitment at Memorial. “An initiative like this really gives prospective students an opportunity to interact and connect with Memorial.”
Last year’s top three rant winners were: Stefanie Peters from Sydney, N.S., Melissa Hoskins of St. John’s, N.L., and Brandon Copeland of Wolfville, N.S.
Mr. Copeland said he liked the fact that this campaign was different from what other universities were doing and that was one of the reasons he decided to enter the contest.
‘“While Memorial was already one of my choice destinations for post-secondary education, the Rant Like Rick contest was a cool concept and a great way for helping with the costs of a university education,” he said.
The campaign Rant Like Rick is based on the concept of Rick Mercer’s rant component of his show The Rick Mercer Report. Two TV ads have been created, one featuring a male and one a female, both “ranting” about some of the factors that prospective students would have to consider when choosing a university. Rick Mercer liked the idea and lent his name to the project.
The Rant like Rick contest is open to all students who are currently enrolled in high school and who will have graduated and be eligible to attend Memorial University in September 2008.
The deadline for the contest is March 14, 2008.
