SUBJECT: Memorial University event celebrates local music

DATE: Jan. 14,2008

The public is invited to attend a special evening celebrating local music next week on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.
It’s all part of the grand opening of the new home of the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place (MMaP) at Memorial.
The free event takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. It will include the official launch of Saturday Nite Jamboree, a CD which features music and songs from the popular local radio show of the 1950s and 1960s.
Two rare live radio recordings have been re-mastered and made public for the first time by MMaP. Two of the original Saturday Nite Jamboree cast members, Ray Walsh and Ted Blanchard, will perform at the launch, as will Ted Rowe and Neil Rosenberg of the band Crooked Stovepipe.
Following the launch, noted author Dr. Daniel Downes from the University of New Brunswick will deliver a lecture entitled Hard Core Troubadours: Social Networking, House Concerts and the 21st-Century Folk Scene in Canada.
The lecture and CD launch takes place in the MMaP Gallery, located on the second floor of the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre (northeast corner) in the former Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador space.
Parking for this event is available in the Arts and Culture Centre parking lot.
MMaP is affiliated with Memorial’s School of Music and the Department of Folklore. Its broad mandate includes supporting academic and community-based research focused on traditional music from this province.
