Memorial University is playing a key role in three library conferences taking place in the capital city this week, as well as a special event to mark the 25th anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth II Library on the St. John’s campus.
Members of the media are invited to attend the following events:
• On Tuesday, May 22, 2007, the Newfoundland and Labrador Library Association is holding its annual meeting in the is holding its annual meeting in the Science Building on the St. John’s campus. Several librarians from Memorial are presenting at that event while a special social will be held that evening to mark the 25th anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth II Library. Opened on . Opened on May 28, 1982, the QEII holds the largest research library collection east of Montreal and currently contains more than 2.5 million books. Members of the media are invited to attend a reception beginning at 6 p.m. in the Map Library, main level of the QEII, on the St. John’s campus. Parking is available in Lot 18.
• Meanwhile, librarians and library staff at Memorial and the Marine Institute will be front and centre during the Canadian Library Association’s annual conference, taking place at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre from Wednesday, May 23 to Saturday, May 26. The theme of this year’s national event, which will attract more than 1,200 delegates, is Retain – Recruit – Restructure: Regenerating the Library Community. A number of people will present at the conference including visual artist Mary Pratt, an honorary degree recipient of Memorial University, who will give a keynote addresses on Friday, May 25, at 9 a.m. Members of the media are invited to attend. • And, on Saturday, May 26, 2007, at the Atlantic Provinces Library Association’s annual banquet, being held in conjunction with the national CLA meeting, longtime – and well-known – Memorial University librarian Richard Ellis will receive the association’s Merit Award for his more than 35 year career. Mr. Ellis is stepping down as university librarian but will continue to work at the QEII. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Delta Hotel. Please check-in with Hospitality Desk for more information.
