For many years, Dr. Sherry Mantyka, director of Memorial’s Mathematics Learning Centre, has been identifying factors which contribute to under-achievement in mathematics of students entering the university. Faced with a pervasive problem she turned to Dr. Michael Rabinowitz, a cognitive psychologist, for assistance, and together they developed solutions to the math problems using cognitive psychology.
This noon-hour talk will outline the nature of the mathematical difficulties so many students face, and some of the solutions. The talk will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28, 12–1 p.m., Arts and Administration Building, room A-1049, St. John’s campus, Memorial University.
