| SUBJECT: | Softball, Hardball: An Examination of Masculinity in Sport | |
| DATE: | Sept. 26, 2006 | |
Multiple and competing constructs of masculinities exist between groups and in various social contexts. This has real consequences for men and women in terms of prestige, status and access to resources. Robert Dykstra, a doctoral candidate in anthropology, will discuss the numerous ways that social inequalities are negotiated, emphasized, or downplayed by men at work, in family relationships and through participation in leisure activities, and will offer a sketch of the sports of softball in Newfoundland and cricket in Jamaica, 4 - 5 p.m in the Science Building, SN-4087, St. John’s campus, Memorial University.
