|SUBJECT:||SWGC: Theatre Program Announces Production: Metamorphoses|
|DATE:||March 2, 2006|
The Theatre Program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College announces its next production. Tony award-winning Metamorphoses, Mary Zimmerman’s breathtaking play that transforms Ovid’s original 8th Century mock-epic poem of classic Greek and Roman myths, into a stunningly beautiful contemporary theatrical masterpiece.
Metamorphoses garnered Tony nominations for both best play and best scenic design and won Mary Zimmerman the Tony Award for best director in 2002.
Ovid’s Metamorphoses has been described as “The most beautiful book in the English language” by the poet Ezra Pound and is said to be one of the most significant inspirations and influences on some of our greatest writers including Shakespeare, Dante, Chaucer and Milton.
In Metamorphoses, Mary Zimmerman masterfully weaves together both contemporary and classical language and imagery. She submerges her audience into a world of gods and goddesses – a world of profound romance, sensuality, beauty, humour, heartbreak and love. The myths and characters that she fishes from the pages of Ovid’s original span the tales of Midas and his golden touch, Orpheus’ heartbreaking quest through the Underworld, Aphrodite’s unspeakable curse on the virgin Myrrha and Pheaton’s firey trip towards the Sun. The theme of transformation and immortality through love lies at the heart of each magical myth that Zimmerman retells. In the end, audiences are left moved, rejuvenated and reborn with the hope: “let me die still loving and so never die”.
Metamorphoses is directed by Charlie Tomlinson, while the set design is by roy Hansen-robitschek. Costume design is by Dylan Cag and music is by Michael Parker.
Metamorphoses runs from March 8 to 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the College Bookstore or at the Box Office on the evening of each performance. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For more information contact the Fine Arts Office at 637-6223.
