SUBJECT: Memorial University celebrates the fourth annual Science Literacy Week
DATE: Sept. 14
Science Literacy Week is a week-long blitz of science-based activities highlighting Canada’s outstanding scientists and science communicators from coast-to-coast.
For one week in September, libraries, universities, museums and other partners put on a spectacular nationwide festival of science. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the week kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 17, with a science fair at the Avalon Mall’s Centre Court from 12-5 p.m., featuring hands-on demonstrations, science story times, science shows and more. It continues throughout the week with nearly 40 activities across the province.
Partner organizations in this province include Memorial University’s Faculty of Science, Bonne Bay Marine Station, Grenfell Campus, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Queen Elizabeth II Library, and Let’s Talk Science; St. John’s Public Libraries; the Johnson GEO Centre; Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium; The Fluvaruim; Salmonier Nature Park; Manuels River Interpretation Centre; and the Corner Brook Public Library.
Through events organized for the week, the public will have an opportunity to experience the wonder of science first-hand. Through scientific inquiry and self-discovery, participants will gain a better appreciation for science and the world around them.
From public talks to explosive chemistry demos to stargazing sessions, this year’s lineup offers something for science lovers of all ages.
