SUBJECT: Canada C3 Voyage: Memorial chancellor to take part in epic journey to celebrate Canada’s 150th
DATE: July 12
Memorial University chancellor, Dr. Susan Dyer Knight, is joining the Canada C3 voyage, a Canada 150 flagship project which involves a 150-day voyage in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. This marine voyage around Canada’s three coasts began June 1 in Toronto and will take students, researchers, and Canadians from all walks of life on an extraordinary voyage of discovery. Organized by the Students on Ice Foundation, the trip will explore 13 sites in Newfoundland and Labrador between July 9-23.
Dr. Knight is part of the contingent that sails out of St. John’s this evening on board the 67-metre research icebreaker, Polar Prince.
“I am looking forward to meeting and collaborating with the other participants as we learn more about our country,” said Dr. Knight. “As ever, I am, proud to be an ambassador for our place and for Memorial on this voyage and along the way to share information about some of Memorial’s world-class teaching, research and public engagement activities.”
Dr. Knight’s itinerary (Leg 5) includes stops in Terra Nova, Fogo Island, L’Anse aux Meadows on the island. The Labrador portion includes Red Bay, the Mealy Mountains National Park, Rigolet, Hopedale and Nain.
The Canada C3 voyage is expected to end on Oct. 28, in Victoria.
Dr. Knight will be available for interviews on board the Polar Prince at Pier 11 during public viewing today, Wednesday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. She will meet members of the press at 10 a.m. on the dock next to the gangway.
As the harbour apron is open to the public, members of the media will not be required to check in at the security gate.
