SUBJECT: St. John’s campus launches Winter Welcome for new students

DATE: Jan. 4,2017

Memorial University’s St. John’s campus is welcoming more than 260 new undergraduate students for the winter 2017 semester. Almost 60 per cent of those beginning their undergraduate studies at Memorial this month are international students.

“The majority of students begin their studies in the fall semester, but we also welcome many new students in January, and many new international students, especially,” said Dr. Jennifer Massey, director, Student Life. “The start of a new academic semester is an exciting time as the university community welcomes new and returning students, and encourages them to connect, engage and belong at Memorial.”

Lynn Walsh, manager, Internationalization Office, says the focus of the office is to provide students with the information and support they need to get started at Memorial and in St. John's.

"From a friendly welcome at the airport, to group information sessions, we are here to ensure students not only have what they need to feel confident and informed in their new environment, but also to help them make connections and become part of the university community," she said.

Dr. Massey urges all new students on the St. John’s campus to participate in the Winter Welcome events planned for this week, Jan. 4-6.

“Winter Welcome is a vibrant program designed to foster a sense of community and enhance the overall well-being of our students,” said Dr. Massey. “This year, through partnerships with academic and administrative units across campus, Memorial will highlight some of the distinctive aspects of a Memorial student experience, by creating shared experiences that inspire students to connect and thrive. Our goal is for all students to start the winter semester confident about their decision to come to Memorial, to feel energized and invested in their learning, and motivated to make the most of their time here.”

This year, Memorial has partnered with the City of St. John’s to offer students an afternoon of free skiing and snowshoeing at Pippy Park on Friday, Jan. 6. Mayor Dennis O’Keefe will lead students on a walk from Memorial Tower to Pippy Park to begin the festivities.

Renata Lang from the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union (MUNSU), says Winter Welcome activities are a great way to start the semester.

"Whether you're returning from a well-deserved break, or embarking on this journey for the first time, you will discover the unique and powerful community spirit and outdoor wonderland that surrounds Memorial’s St. John's campus,” said Ms. Lang. “Winter Welcome is your chance to grab our free handbooks and swag, meet fellow leaders that run our hundreds of student groups, or bundle up for brand new outdoor activities. It's sure to be the kick off you need for 2017."
