Memorial music students dominate competition

Ref. No. 88

DATE:     Feb. 4, 2002
SUBJECT:     Memorial music students dominate competition

Of just five Atlantic Canadian winners in CBC Radio's prestigious new competition for young performers of classical music, three are students at Memorial University's School of Music.

Andrew Dunsmore, Sean Rice, and Philip Roberts will shortly sign contracts to appear on Up and Coming, an initiative of CBC Radio Two designed to showcase some of Canada's most promising young classical musicians.

Dr. Tom Gordon, Director of the MUN School of Music, said "I'm absolutely thrilled ... It's yet another testament to both the quality of the music school and the richness of the musical community in the province."

Percussionist Andrew Dunsmore is a second-year student. Before attending Memorial, he was a student of the late Don Wherry.

Philip Roberts is also in his second year of music studies at Memorial, and plans to major in piano performance.

Clarinetist Sean Rice is a long-time student of Paul Bendza, also a MUN faculty member.

Dr. Gordon said of the three, "They're all seasoned competitors, having won varied awards in their careers already. And they are truly three real winners heading for brilliant futures as performers."

On April 8, the three will be in Wolfville, N.S. for a performance which will be taped in front of an invited studio audience. The Wolfville event is one of five live-to-tape events being held across the country; host for the series is well-known Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker (who Mr. Roberts refers to as his "hero"). Up and Coming programs will be aired on CBC Radio Two beginning next fall.

The most promising musician in the entire series will be offered a scholarship at The Banff Centre for a summer 2003 master class program. While there, the winner will also have the opportunity to make a demo CD.
