Vic Young appointed Executive-in-Residence at Memorial University |
Dr. Bill Blake, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial
University, announced today that Vic Young has accepted the Faculty's
invitation to spend the fall term as executive-in-residence effective Oct.
1, 2001.
Speaking on behalf of the management group, Dr. Blake expressed pleasure
that Mr. Young had agreed to become part of the team at the business
faculty: "Mr. Young's extensive experience in government; as chairman and
CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro; and more recently as chairman and
CEO of Fishery Products International has given him a wealth of business
expertise and knowledge that can be shared with both faculty and students."
Mr. Young has had a close relationship with the Faculty of Business
Administration and the university since graduating with his bachelor of
commerce Degree in 1966. He was founding chair of the faculty's Advisory
Board and served in that capacity from 1980 to 1984. He was also
recognized by the University as Alumnus of the Year in 1985 and by the
Faculty of Business as Alumnus of the Year in 1994. In
1996 Memorial awarded him an honorary doctorate degree. He recently served
as vice-chair of Memorial's highly successful Opportunity Fund campaign.
Dr. Axel Meisen, Memorial's president, also welcomed Mr. Young's
appointment and indicated his pleasure at the turn of events: "Vic Young
has a long record of success in business leadership at the local, national
and international level," he said. "His directorships on companies such as
Royal Bank of Canada, BCE and McCain Foods and his recognition as a
corporate leader will provide further opportunities for the business
faculty to network with the Canadian as well as the international business
community."
The position of executive-in-residence -- a non-paying position -- provides
the opportunity for a distinguished business leader to spend time in the
academic environment, interacting with both students and faculty and
engaging in a two-way exchange which is beneficial to all. It is expected
that, during his tenure as Executive-in-Residence, Mr. Young will share his
management expertise with students and faculty through both one-on-one
interactions and through involvement in classes, lectures and presentations.
Mr. Young expressed his delight that he has been asked to take on the
opportunities provided by the executive-in-residence position: "I have
always had a great admiration for Memorial University, which I consider to
be Newfoundland's most important institution," he said. "Its role in
providing the knowledge base to our next generation of leadership is vital
to the future prosperity of our province. Anything that I can do to
contribute to the university experience of today's business students will
be extremely satisfying for me. As a graduate from the Faculty of Business
Administration, I am really looking forward to having the opportunity to
give something back to Memorial."
