Bert Rutan, the man responsible
for designing and building the world's first and only non-stop
around-the-world aircraft, the Voyager, is this year's Angel
lecturer. His lecture on Breakthroughs: How, When and Why They
Happen, will take place on Monday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. in Room
2006 of the Engineering Building.
Mr. Rutan was also the designer of the catamaran captained by
Dennis Connor in the America's Cup challenge and the gondola
for Richard Branson's attempted non-stop balloon flight around
the world.
Mr. Rutan's visionary designs have also been featured in several
Hollywood films, including Death Race 2000, Octopussy, and Iron
Eagle III.
Admission to the lecture is free; however capacity is limited
so those planning to attend are encouraged to obtain tickets
from the Engineering General Office, EN-4019.
Named in honour of a distinguished Newfoundland engineer, the
F.W. Angel Memorial Lecture was established in 1967 for the purpose
of bringing an outstanding person to campus to stimulate thinking
about engineering and its role in society among students, the
academic community and the general public.
