Important Information Concerning Negotiations for your First Collective Agreement with Memorial University of Newfoundland

The Lecturers’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (LUMUN) was certified on April 26, 2012, to represent Postdoctoral Fellows at MUN. LUMUN also represents Per Course Instructors at the University.

Your Bargaining Team has been trying for almost a full year now to negotiate a first contract with MUN. Bargaining teams for both the Union and the University exchanged proposals on October 30, 2012, and there have been several bargaining sessions since then. *Please see below for Articles that have been agreed upon.

Last July, your Bargaining Team presented a comprehensive package of economic demands to the University, including proposals for wage increases, benefits, pensions, child care, designated university holidays, vacations, and local union support.

On wages, the Union has proposed that the following minimum wages be instituted:

$40,000 per annum, retroactive to April 22, 2012

$41,200 per annum, retroactive to September 1, 2013

$42,436 per annum, effective September 1, 2014

$43,709 per annum, effective September 1, 2015

The Union has also proposed a wage grid with step increases based on the anniversary date of hire. And the Union is seeking wage increases equal to the proposed increases in the wage grid for all Postdoctoral Fellows, including those paid above the proposed minimums.

On benefits and pensions, the Union has proposed that Postdoctoral Fellows should have the same benefits (health, dental, life insurance, etc) and the same rights to join the MUN pension plan as all other full-time University employees.

The parties have now reached agreement on designated university holidays and on vacations language. MUN has to date not responded to wages, benefits, pensions and other economic proposals tabled by the Union last July. Also still outstanding is agreement on an article on Professional Development and Orientation.

A full year of negotiations is long enough! Postdocs deserve a fair deal at MUN!
