TENTATIVE AGREEMENT FOR FIRST CONTRACT FOR POSTDOCS AT MUN
The Lecturers’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland has reached a tentative agreement with MUN for a first contract for Postdoctoral Fellows at the University.
The tentative agreement comes after more than a year of arduous and sometimes frustrating negotiations with the University. The parties exchanged proposals in October, 2012, and reached a tentative agreement on all outstanding issues last Friday, December 13, 2013.
LUMUN was certified by the Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Relations Board to represent Postdoctoral Fellows at MUN on April 26, 2012. LIUMUN also represents Per Course Instructors at the University, who are currently in negotiations for a new Collective Agreement as well. LUMUN is affiliated with the Public Service Alliance of Canada through a servicing agreement.
The tentative agreement, if ratified by the membership, will be the third contract PSAC has achieved for Postdoctoral Fellows, and only the fourth in Canada.
Postdocs at Queen’s University in Kingston ON ratified a first contract in late October, following successful bargaining for a first contract for postdocs at Western University in London, ON in March, 2012. PSAC is also in the process of bargaining first contracts for postdocs at three universities in Quebec.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees represents some postdoctoral fellows at McMaster University in Hamilton.
“We are very pleased to have finally achieved a first contract for postdocs at Memorial,” said Martha Wells, President of LUMUN. “This first contract provides many rights and protections for Postdoctoral Fellows and will standardize their working conditions and their relationship with the University.”
Preparations are being made for a ratification meeting early in the New Year, when Postdoctoral Fellows will be provided with details of the first contract and by given an opportunity to vote on it. Please stay tuned for further developments.
