Opportunities to work in a francophone milieu

1)  Odyssey  (Language Assistant in a francophone milieu in Canada)

The application period opens in late October and closes on February 28.  Make sure your on-line application is complete and that all sets of supporting documents have been sent to your provincial or territorial coordinator prior to the February 28 deadline.

Only about 20 students per year avail of this program.

9-month contract, students receive a salary of $25,000 for 25 hours of work per week assisting teachers in a francophone school.  They also get two return tickets home.  Students are responsible for their own living expenses, including housing.

Only requirement: to be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (not based on abilities to speak French).

2)  France Éducation Internationale  (Language Assistant in France)

300 positions are available and are rarely completely filled.  You can apply during your second year at University.  You must have a good knowledge of French.  The contract is 7 months in duration which consists of 12 hours a week of conversation classes for a salary of  about 1000 euros (about 800 euros net a month).

3)  Parliamentary Guide Program

What does a parliamentary guide do?  A Parliamentary guide welcomes visitors to Parliament, leads guided tours of Central Block, which houses Canada's Senate, House of Common and Library of Parliament, greets visitors in the Peace Tower and Memorial Chamber and offers guided tours of the restored historic rooms of East Block.  The program runs from Labour Day to mid-May with a one-week training period in late August.

$22.29 per hour for 10-30 hours a week in Fall/Winter (an average of 40h in Summer), plus travel costs and $1,000  (Summer only) for living allowance in Ottawa (assistance with finding accommodations at one of the local universities and partial reimbursement of airfare).  Must be fulltime university students and must be bilingual.

4)  Student Guide Program (Veterans Affairs Canada)

Veterans Affairs Canada employs Canadian students as guides year round at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial.  This is a unique opportunity to travel, live and work in France for a period of four months.  Student guides are required to provide interpretation of the preserved battlefield and underground tunnels in both official languages.  In addition, guides are expected to provide information and answer questions from visitors with respect to Canadian military history and points of interest in the region.

16 positions are available at each location at a rate of $16.49-$18.91 per hour plus a daily living allowance of $28.00 per day.  Successful applicants may be eligible for reimbursement of all or part of their airfare up to $800. Accommodations in Arras are subsidized by Veteran Affairs: approximately $300 deducted from your pay on a monthly basis.

5)  Bordeaux Exchange  (Université Bordeaux-Montaigne)

The Bordeaux exchange program is 2 semesters in length and is offered to one French graduate student each year (or to a stuent who is about to graduate with a BA in French Studies and plans to register for the MA in French Studies).   This is an opportunity to work as a lecteur or lectrice supervising English language courses and giving conversation classes at l'Université Bordeaux-Montaigne for a salary of approximately 1500 euros a month for 12 months.

6)  YCW - Young Canada Works

Canada Works (YCW) offers students and recent graduates the chance to put their skills to the test, build career equity, earn money for their education or get started on the right career path.

Summer jobs and internships give young people access to unique opportunities to learn and work, whether to practice their second language, work in a museum, an Aboriginal friendship centre or even travel abroad.

7)  Federal Student Work Experience Program

FSWEP is the primary vehicle through which federal organizations recruit and hire students.  This program provides thousands of students with temporary jobs every year in various federal organizations across Canada.

They have a wide variety of cool jobs from coast to coast, varying from outdoor fieldwork and research to office positions in administration, IT and finance, from work in trades to policy and communications and many more!

Opportunities to study in a francophone milieu

1)  Frecker Program

For information regarding registration, please contact the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

The Frecker Program takes place in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and the duration is 1 semester in the fall or summer.  Up to 30 students are accepted each semester.

Students admitted in the Fall program will register for French 2100, 2101, 2300, 2900 and 2602.  Approximate dates for the fall program are September 9 to December 7.

Students admitted in the summer program will register for French 2300 and 2900.  Approximate dates for the summer program are July 3rd to July 29th.

Cost:  Program fee of  $1500 (Summer program) or $2000 (Fall program) covers textbooks, cultural activities, room and board, and return flight (this is cheaper than living in residence). The Provincial Government subsidizes this program funding under Canada’s Official Languages Act.

Prerequisite:  Completion of FREN 1502 with a minimum grade of 65%

3)  Université de Bretagne Sud Exchange

This program is one semester in length (January to May).  Up to 4 students from Memorial are selected each year to participate in the program that takes place in Lorient, France.

Specified and unspecified MUN credits may be granted to students upon successful completion of courses at UBS.

4)  Lycée de Saint-Pierre Exchange (2 semesters- 4 students)

• Students receive a bursary of 1,500 euros ($2,200) to help defray the cost of living from Saint-Pierre’s Collectivité Territoriale as part of an exchange programme with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador that sees also sees 4 students from Saint-Pierre studying in Newfoundland. Students can register for courses and received up to 18 unspecified credits at the 3000 level. Of particular interest to students planning a career in teaching as it allows them to study their teachable subjects in French while earning 3rd year MUN credits in French.

• Eligibility: Resident of Newfoundland and Labrador + completion of either FR 3100 or FR 3101 with a minimum mark of 70%.

5)  Explore Program

The application deadline is normally mid-February.

The Explore Program is a French immersion program offered in various francophone regions across Canada. There  are 5238 seats for Canada and of those seats over 200 are for Newfoundland and Labrador.

This is a government-subsidized program. Students only pay for transportation costs and personal expenditures as the government bursary covers tuition fees, room and board. Students who successfully complete this program in a francophone university will receive 3 unspecified credits in French.

Eligibility: Canadian citizen or permanent resident + have been a full time student for at least one term during the current school year.

6) Integrated French Immersion Option (Université Sainte-Anne)

Université Ste-Anne offers the Integrated French Immersion Option for students who need an extra boost to reach the B2 level of the DELF exam. This is a one- or two-semester program which will also count as time spent in a French-language milieu. Financial help is available from Université Ste-Anne and classes are small.
