Switching from POP to IMAP in Mail on OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar) to OS X 10.3.x (Panther).
The following documentation is used to help users to migrate from the POP service to IMAP for users of OS X 10.2.x to 10.3.x. The process is as follows:
Step 1. Back up your current POP email. To do this, you will have to create a mailbox on your Mac?s local hard drive. Click the Mailbox menu, and choose New?.
Step 2. To ensure the location of the new mailbox is on the hard drive of your Mac, make sure it says On My Mac. You may name the new mailbox whatever you like, in this example, we have chosen Old Mail.
Step 3. Now transfer all mail from your inbox to your new local mailbox. Making sure you have your current inbox open, select all of the messages by clicking the Edi? menu and choose Select all.
Step 4. Once selected, drag all of the email messages from your inbox to your local mailbox.
Step 5. Once you have verified that your new local mailbox contains the messages in your In Box, repeat steps 1 through 4 for your Sent mail as well. Once your In box and Sent mail have been backed up, you will remove your old POP account. Click the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
Step 6. Once the Preferences screen is open, remove the current POP account. To remove this, highlight your POP account and click on the minus sign (-) at the bottom. If you hover your mouse over the minus sign, Remove an account will appear.
It will prompt you for confirmation. Click OK.
Step 7. To add your new IMAP account, click on the plus sign (+). You will now enter the information for your account in the fields on the right side. Start by selecting IMAP as the Account type.
Step 8. Fill out the remainder of the fields with your own information. The Incoming Mail Server should read mail.mun.ca. Please note: if you are using an internet service provider other than MUN, then you will need to ask your Internet Service Provider for the proper SMTP settings for your e-mail.
Step 9. To change the Outgoing Mail Server, click the pop-up ribbon and select Add Server?.
Step 10. Enter mail.mun.ca for the Outgoing Mail Server. Then click OK.
Step 11. Your new account is now complete. Close the Preference window, making sure to save changes when prompted.
