Note to employees regarding recent ATIPP requests

15 March 2015

Memorial has recently received multiple requests under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 (ATIPP requests) for remuneration details of university employees (by position and, in one case, by name and position). The legislation expressly requires that the university disclose this information when requested and notice to employees is not required. The university’s Information Access and Privacy office is neither permitted to share requesters’ names or affiliations, nor can it enquire as to the purpose for a request. The university cannot control what requesters will do with the information they receive in response to ATIPP requests.

While not required, as a courtesy to impacted employees, in this instance we are advising the university community that in response to these ATIPP requests, the university will disclose the requested information. Details about these particular ATIPP requests, including the classes of employees or units affected, the type of information to be disclosed, and the dates the information will be disclosed are available at ATIPP Requests.

Given the recent public and community interest surrounding compensation policies and practices for many publicly-funded organizations, Human Resources has compiled some information at www.mun.ca/hr/administrators/hiring/Overview_Comp_Salaries_at_MUN.pdf to provide context.

Access to Information Requests

Informal Process

If you wish to access information contained in records at Memorial, either general information or information about yourself, it is best to start by contacting the department at Memorial that has the information. The ATIPP Act is in addition to and does not replace existing procedures for access to information or records. A formal ATIPP request is usually not necessary to access information. In general, an informal request can be completed more quickly and with less hassle than an ATIPP request.

Formal Process

If the information cannot be accessed through the routine process, an ATIPP Request can be made by completing the application form and submitting it to the University Access and Privacy Advisor (contact information below).

For further information, please see the FAQ section or contact the ATIPP Analyst in the IAP Office.
