FIRST CLASS POWER ENGINEER
SUPERVISOR OF PLANT MAINTENANCE, CENTRAL UTILITIES
The Utilities Annex (Combined Pressure Plant) is a technically complex operation comprised of a thermal generating plant capable of delivering 360 degree high temperature hot water through four boilers with a rated capacity of 220,000 pounds per hour; a significant chiller operation of 4800 ton installed capacity to provide chilled water for air conditioning; and emergency power generators providing 3.2 MW of emergency power. Under the direction of the Manager of Central Utilities, the Supervisor, Maintenance Central Utilities, will assist in the maintenance of the Combined Pressure Plant and associated services at the Health Sciences Complex, through the management and supervision of the ongoing maintenance operation.
Duties include supervising, planning and directing the scheduled and demand maintenance programs for the Utilities Annex; coordinating the ongoing development of the computerized maintenance management program and its utilization in administering the plant maintenance program; coordinating the retention of externally contracted services; developing and maintaining a system of regularly scheduled and reactive system/equipment inspections and tests; coordinating with the Manager as it relates to operational issues identified including recommending changes in operating shift procedures and processes based on maintenance requirements; coordinating leave schedules and relief staff requirements; administering operating budgets related to assigned responsibilities; supervising and administering the collective agreement as it applies to assigned staff; liaising with other departmental sections, other University departments, and the Department of Labour; maintaining effective communication streams with clients and other units; participating in regular staff and central utilities meetings; coordinating general purchasing activities; providing relief for the Manager, Central Utilities and the Supervisor of External Plants when on scheduled leave, and performing other related duties as required.
Thorough experience (5-10 years) in the maintenance and operation of a power plant, including supervisory experience in a unionized environment; possession of a valid 1st Class Power Engineer Certificate (candidates with a 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate and who are actively working towards a 1st Class Power Engineer ticket and will have successful completion within three years from hire date will also be considered). Knowledge of a wide variety of power plant and building equipment; the maintenance and operation of a high pressure multiple-boiler operation; computer control systems as they relate to equipment control systems and interfaces and with operating conditions in remote locations; multi-unit standby power system; computerized maintenance management systems; and occupational health and safety standards is required.
